MICROSOFT WORD WORKFLOWS

Mangal and Kruti Dev.

Choose these pages when your source or required output is described as Mangal in a Word document, office instruction or typing workflow.

i

Mangal is a Unicode font

Mangal text uses standard Unicode Devanagari. The dedicated Mangal pages use the same encoding direction as Unicode conversion, but provide steps written for Microsoft Word users.

CHOOSE THE RIGHT DIRECTION

What does your text look like?

The font name in Word is useful, but the way copied text behaves is often the easiest clue.

YOU SEE PROPER HINDI

Start with Unicode or Mangal

If copied text stays readable as हिन्दी on a website or phone, it is probably Unicode.

  • Choose Unicode to Kruti Dev for Kruti Dev output.
  • Choose Mangal to Kruti Dev when Word calls the font Mangal.
  • Choose Unicode to Chanakya for Chanakya output.
Start with Unicode →
OR
YOU SEE RANDOM LATIN LETTERS

Start with a legacy font

If Hindi looks correct only after selecting Kruti Dev or Chanakya, it is probably legacy-encoded text.

  • Choose Kruti Dev to Unicode for Kruti Dev input.
  • Choose Kruti Dev to Mangal for a Word-ready result.
  • Choose Chanakya to Unicode for Chanakya input.
Start with Kruti Dev →

UNDERSTAND THE FORMATS

Font style is not always text encoding.

A font changes how text looks. An encoding decides which stored value represents each character. Legacy Hindi fonts often map Devanagari shapes to Latin code positions.

01

Unicode

Modern Hindi text standard used by websites, search engines, phones, email and current office software.

02

Kruti Dev

A widely used legacy Devanagari font family. Text may not stay readable when its required font is missing.

03

Mangal

A Unicode Devanagari font in Windows. Changing from one Unicode font to Mangal normally changes appearance, not encoding.

04

Chanakya

A separate legacy Devanagari font system with its own character mapping and conversion direction.

05

Conversion

Changes the stored text mapping so the same Hindi content works in a different encoding system.

06

Transliteration

Changes typing such as “namaste” into “नमस्ते”. That is different from legacy-font conversion.

Mixed text can need extra checking. A document may contain Unicode, Kruti Dev and normal English in the same paragraph. Convert one known font section at a time and compare important names, numbers and matras with the original.

SAFE CONVERSION STEPS

Keep the original document safe.

Font conversion changes text, not the complete document layout. Work on a copy and check the result before replacing important content.

01

Check the source font

Identify whether the text is Unicode, Mangal, Kruti Dev or Chanakya.

02

Copy plain text

Paste only the required section into the matching converter page.

03

Review the Hindi

Check matras, half letters, reph, numbers, punctuation and names carefully.

04

Apply the output font

When using a legacy result in Word, select the matching installed legacy font.

WHAT A TEXT CONVERTER DOES

Text first, formatting second.

These converters are designed for copied text. They do not automatically rebuild tables, page layout, images, columns or every style from a Word, PDF or PageMaker file.

01

Works best with known source text

Select the converter that matches the actual input font or encoding.

02

Font installation can still matter

Legacy output may look incorrect until the correct Kruti Dev or Chanakya font is applied.

03

PDF copying can add errors

Scanned PDFs need OCR, while encoded PDFs may copy text in a different order.

04

Always keep a backup

Save the original before converting government, legal, academic or office documents.

COMMON QUESTIONS

Hindi font converter FAQs

Is Mangal the same as Unicode?

Mangal is a font that displays Unicode Devanagari text. People often say “Mangal text” when they mean Unicode Hindi shown with the Mangal font.

Is Kruti Dev a Unicode font?

No. Kruti Dev is a legacy non-Unicode font family. Its text depends on a specific character-to-glyph mapping and the correct font being installed.

Which converter should I use for Hindi from WhatsApp?

Hindi copied from WhatsApp is normally Unicode. Choose Unicode to Kruti Dev or Unicode to Chanakya only if you need one of those legacy outputs.

Why does Kruti Dev text look like English letters?

The legacy text uses Latin code positions to display Hindi shapes through the Kruti Dev font. Without that font, the stored characters can appear as Latin letters and symbols.

Can I use the Kruti Dev converter for Chanakya?

No. Chanakya and Kruti Dev use different mappings. Choose a converter made for the exact legacy font.

Is font conversion the same as transliteration?

No. Font conversion moves existing Hindi text between encoding systems. Transliteration changes phonetic Latin typing such as “bharat” into “भारत”.

Will bold text, tables and images also convert?

No. A text converter works on pasted text. Copy the converted text back into your document and apply formatting separately.

Why should I check the converted result?

Legacy documents can contain custom mappings, mixed fonts or copying errors. Review matras, conjuncts, punctuation, names and numbers before using the result.
