A word processor, online form and typing exam may use different counting rules. The labels below show exactly what this tool includes.
Real words in the text
The counter uses language-aware browser rules when available. Words can contain letters or numbers and are not limited to English.
Characters left in the box
Includes letters, numbers, punctuation, spaces and line breaks in the final text. Deleted characters are no longer included.
Keys pressed during this session
Counts keyboard presses made while the text box is active, including correction keys. Pasting text does not create the same physical key events.
Groups of five keystrokes
Many typing tests use five keystrokes as one standard word. This is different from counting normal space-separated words.
Important: browser key events cannot perfectly measure every mobile keyboard, speech input, predictive-text action or input method. Use “actual key presses” as a live practice counter, not an official exam score.

Do not replace “characters” with “words” or “keystrokes.” Check the exact label in your school task, application form, job notice or content brief.

Word and keystroke counter FAQs
What is counted as a word?
The tool uses the browser's language-aware word segmenter when available and falls back to a Unicode word pattern. Results can differ slightly from Microsoft Word or an exam system.
Do characters include spaces?
Final-text keystrokes include spaces and line breaks. The separate “characters without spaces” result removes all whitespace.
What is the difference between keystrokes and key presses?
Final-text keystrokes describe characters remaining in the text. Actual key presses count keyboard events in the box, including correction keys. Pasted text adds characters without the same key presses.
How are standard typing words calculated?
The final-text keystroke count is divided by five. For example, 1,500 keystrokes equal 300 standard words.
Can this count Hindi and other Indian languages?
Yes. The tool uses Unicode-aware counting and language-aware browser segmentation when supported. An official exam system may still apply its own rules.
Why can an emoji count look different in another tool?
Some tools count UTF-16 code units, some count Unicode code points and others count visible grapheme clusters. This tool uses Unicode code points for final-text keystrokes.
Does this tool store the text?
No. The text is processed inside the current page and is cleared when the page is refreshed.
