HOW TO USE IT

Plan a typing task in three steps.

Use a speed from a recent full-length typing test. A one-minute personal best may make a long assignment look faster than it really is.

01

Add the text

Paste the full text for an automatic count, or enter the known number of words.

02

Enter your WPM

Use net WPM when possible. If you only know gross WPM, add accuracy for an estimate.

03

Plan your time

Read the typing time, add a small buffer and check the speed needed for your deadline.

CALCULATION METHOD

Simple maths, clearly shown.

The main estimate divides the word count by effective words per minute. Seconds are rounded to the nearest whole second.

NET WPM MODE

Typing time formula

Time in minutes = words ÷ net WPM

Example: 600 words at 40 net WPM takes 15 minutes.

GROSS WPM MODE

Accuracy adjustment

Effective WPM ≈ gross WPM × accuracy

Example: 50 gross WPM at 90% accuracy gives an estimated effective speed of 45 WPM. Official typing tests may use a different error formula.

QUICK EXAMPLES

Typing time by word count.

These examples use net speed with no extra correction time. Your actual time can change with formatting, numbers, difficult words and breaks.

REAL-WORLD TIME

Why the actual time may be longer.

A calculator estimates continuous typing. Add planning time separately when you must think, research, format or copy information from another screen.

01

Editing and corrections

Low accuracy adds time for backspace, rereading and fixing repeated mistakes.

02

Numbers and symbols

Dates, formulas, punctuation and special characters can slow normal text speed.

03

Formatting

Headings, tables, lists and page layout are not included in the pure typing estimate.

04

Long-task tiredness

Your speed may drop during a long task. Use the 10% buffer and schedule short breaks.

COMMON QUESTIONS

Typing time calculator FAQs

How is typing time calculated?

Typing time equals the number of words divided by your effective WPM. The result is converted from minutes into hours, minutes and seconds.

Should I use net WPM or gross WPM?

Use net WPM if your typing test provides it. Net speed already includes an error penalty. Use gross mode only when you know raw speed and accuracy but not net WPM.

How long does it take to type 1,000 words?

At 40 WPM it takes about 25 minutes of continuous typing. At 60 WPM it takes about 16 minutes 40 seconds. Add time for thinking, editing and formatting.

What does the 10% buffer mean?

It adds 10% to the calculated typing time for small pauses and normal variation. It is planning advice, not part of the WPM formula.

How does the deadline calculator work?

Required WPM equals the word count divided by the number of minutes available. Compare this with your effective WPM to see if the deadline looks realistic.

Does pasted text leave my browser?

No. The JavaScript in this widget counts the text on the page. The tool does not send or save the text.

Is one word always five characters?

Typing tests often use five characters as one standard word when calculating WPM. This page counts real space-separated words in pasted text because its main purpose is task-time planning.
