WHAT THE TEST CHECKS
More than a simple key highlight.
The tester reads keydown and keyup events, keeps a tested-key map and watches for unusual behaviour.
Key response
Confirms that the browser received a press and release for the physical key position.
Rollover and ghosting
Shows how many keys are held together and remembers the highest detected count.
Held or stuck key warning
Flags a key that stays down for an unusually long time without a keyup event.
Repeat and chatter clues
Uses repeat events and very fast duplicate presses to show a possible switch problem.
Physical key code
Shows KeyboardEvent.code so the same physical position can be identified across layouts.
Recent event history
Keeps the last ten key codes visible while you test different rows and combinations.
KEYBOARD ROLLOVER TEST
How many keys work together?
Hold several keys at the same time. “Held now” shows the current combination and “Max rollover” saves the highest number detected in this session.
Basic rollover
The keyboard reliably reports two simultaneous keys. Some extra combinations may still work.
Six-key rollover
Up to six normal keys can be detected together, usually with modifier keys as well.
N-key rollover
Many or all keys can be detected together. Test the exact combinations you actually use.
Keys a browser may not fully detect
A missing highlight does not always mean the keyboard is broken. Your operating system or browser can handle some keys before this page receives them.
- The Fn key is normally handled inside the keyboard and often sends no separate browser event.
- Brightness, volume, power and special media keys may be handled by the operating system.
- Shortcuts such as Ctrl+W, Cmd+Q, Alt+Tab, F5 or F11 can close, reload or leave the page.
- Print Screen behaviour differs between browsers and operating systems.
Technical basis: the tester uses the browser’s keydown, KeyboardEvent.key, code and repeat values. The physical key position is mapped with `KeyboardEvent.code`.

What to do when a key fails.
Test another browser
Reload the page, reconnect the keyboard and test the same key in another browser or computer.
Check for key chatter
Press the key slowly several times. Clean the key or switch and compare the event history.
Release and reconnect
Press the key again, click Reset, then reconnect the keyboard if the problem continues.
Test rollover patterns
Try the exact combination with and without modifier keys. Some keyboards block only certain groups.
Check language layout
If the physical key works but prints another character, check the keyboard language in your system.
Check the Fn layer
Fn combinations can work correctly without showing Fn as a separate key in a browser tester.

How do I know if a keyboard key is working?
Start the test and press the physical key. The matching on-screen key should turn blue while held and green after release.
Why does the Fn key not appear?
Fn is usually processed inside the keyboard hardware. The operating system and browser often do not receive a separate Fn key event.
Can this test find keyboard ghosting?
It can show which simultaneous keys reach the browser. Hold your normal key combination and compare the number held with the keys highlighted on screen.
What does max rollover mean?
It is the highest number of keys detected at the same time during the current test session.
Can this test detect double typing?
The tester can show repeat events and flag very fast duplicate presses as a possible issue. Retest the key before deciding the switch is faulty.
Does this keyboard tester record what I type?
No. The tool uses key events to update the page during this session. It does not contain a network request or account system for saving your keys.
Why does a browser shortcut leave the page?
Some keyboard shortcuts are controlled by the browser or operating system before the tester can stop them. Avoid destructive shortcuts while testing.
