Your result is ready

The error penalty reduced your speed by 3.00 WPM.

Formula used

Gross WPM = (300 ÷ 5) ÷ 1 = 60.00

UNDERSTAND YOUR RESULT

Six numbers, explained simply.

Speed alone does not show the full result. Accuracy and the error method can change your final score.

GW

Gross WPM

Your raw typing speed before any mistake penalty is applied.

NW

Net WPM

Your speed after errors or penalty strokes are removed.

%

Accuracy

The percentage of your gross result that remains after mistakes.

CPM

Characters per minute

The number of characters or strokes typed in one minute.

KPH

KPH or KDPH

Keystrokes or key depressions per hour. One WPM commonly equals 300 KPH.

ER

Error rate

The percentage of your result lost because of uncorrected mistakes.

FORMULAS USED

See exactly how every score is calculated.

The calculator shows the formula with your own numbers. This helps you check a result instead of trusting a hidden score.

STANDARD METHOD

Character-based typing result

Five characters count as one standard word. Word errors and character errors are handled differently.

Gross WPM = characters ÷ 5 ÷ minutes
Net WPM = gross WPM − word errors ÷ minutes
Accuracy = net WPM ÷ gross WPM × 100
EXAM PENALTY METHOD

Full and half mistakes

This mode uses weighted mistakes and penalty strokes. Use it only when the official notice follows this method.

Weighted mistakes = full + half ÷ 2
Net strokes = total strokes − weighted mistakes × penalty
Net WPM = net strokes ÷ 5 ÷ minutes

WHY THIS CALCULATOR IS DIFFERENT

One calculator for real typing results.

Many calculators show only WPM. TypingNation also explains the error method, shows the working and supports government-exam style penalties.

No duplicate calculators

WPM, accuracy, CPM, KPH and error rate appear in one result.

Words or characters

Use the same input type that your typing software gives you.

Minutes and seconds

Calculate short tests accurately instead of rounding the test time.

Visible formula breakdown

Every result can be checked step by step with your entered values.

COMMON QUESTIONS

Typing speed calculator FAQs

How is typing speed calculated?

For a character-based test, divide the total characters by five and then divide by the time in minutes. This gives gross WPM. Net WPM is calculated after applying the selected error method.

Why does one word equal five characters?

Real words have different lengths. Using five characters as one standard word makes results easier to compare across different passages.

What is the difference between gross WPM and net WPM?

Gross WPM is your speed before mistakes. Net WPM is the remaining speed after the error or exam penalty is applied.

Should I select word error or character error?

Select the unit used by your result sheet. If it reports incorrect words, choose word error. If it reports individual wrong characters, choose character error.

How do I convert WPM to KPH or KDPH?

Using the five-character standard, multiply WPM by 300. For example, 35 WPM equals 10,500 KPH or KDPH.

Can I use this result for SSC, Railway or another exam?

You can use it to understand and check a score, but the final calculation must follow the latest official notification and software used by your exam authority.

Why do different websites show different net WPM?

They may count errors differently. Some subtract incorrect words, some subtract incorrect characters, and some exam methods apply penalty strokes for full and half mistakes.
